Meet Nancy

Background

5 Generations in Leavenworth County

Part of my family has lived in Leavenworth city and county for 5 generations.  Yes I am a “townie”, “local yokel”, whatever.   I’m very proud to live in an area that hosts families from around the country and world.  Even though I worked in Kansas City for several years, I always chose to live here.

The men in my family were all US Army veterans.  My father, Frank Clark, with two business partners, started Midwest Marine, a boat business.  My grandfather, Ralph Pearsley, retired from the US Penitentiary and had his own electronics and television repair business.  Grandma Pearsley was a seamstress, designing and creating wedding gowns.   My other grandfather, Harry Clark, was a blacksmith in Jarbalo, and Grandma Clark was proficient in building and restoring furniture.  I grew up the eldest of five children.  My mother worked hard as a stay at home mom.

Nancy, Mike, Janine & Steve Clark. Terri came along several years later.

I have two sons: Adam (and his girlfriend Angie), who live in Minneapolis, and Dustin (and his girlfriend Yuki), who live in Osaka, Japan.

Education

I’ve met extraordinary educators throughout the years who guided my life.  Mr. Richard Warren was my guidance counselor at Leavenworth High School.  Since I enjoyed working at Cushing laboratory in high school, he urged me to go into medicine.   Of course I didn’t, I wanted to be an artist, so I went to college a couple of years, dropped out, got married and finally graduated from Saint Mary College with a degree in Medical Technology.  I also obtained a Masters in Business and Management from Webster University.

I finished my undergraduate degree when my children were small so that I could work fewer hours and spend more time with them.  Quality education has allowed me to be able to work at jobs that I am passionate about.

Work History

Volunteering for St Vincent Clinic 1985

I worked for 35 years in the health field, for 8 years as office manager for Dr. Hammeke, an ophthalmologist, back to college, then several years as a lab technologist at Cushing, Saint John, and the VA Center.  During classes, my children were in preschool at the Ancilla Center at Saint Mary College.  There I got to know Sister Anna Totta and Sister Rosalie Mahoney.  I became the first volunteer for Saint Vincent Clinic, sitting on the task force and recruiting the first two physician medical directors, Dr. Robert Parker and Dr. Vernon Mills.  I also set up the lab and volunteered there for several years before becoming clinic manager.

Since the kids were nearly grown, I worked for several years for Health Midwest, a system of 12 hospitals and more than 100 medical clinics in the Kansas City area.  I started out as a practice manager and moved into risk management for the system.  As a risk manager I was in charge of risk issues for Baptist Medical Center, all of the physicians offices, and the laboratories of Health Midwest.  During this time I lived in Leavenworth county and drove back and forth to Kansas City.   When Health Midwest was taken over by HCA, a layoff was imminent.  I loved my job and hated to leave.  But after years of fighting with insurance companies,  driving long distances and working long hours, I decided to look for work in my community.

Since then, I have worked at the Main Street Program, where my greatest accomplishments were recruiting over 75 businesses to the Leavenworth area, and directing the Lewis and Clark Signature event in 2004.    After that I was Marketing Director for Michaels Military Housing at Fort Leavenworth.  The most rewarding part  of that position was setting up focus groups of different ranks of Soldiers to meet with architects to design their new homes.  The focus group for families with disabilities was the most enlightening.  I also designed the Frontier Heritage Communities logo.

I worked for a few months to set up the new Saint Luke’s Medical Group and Care for Women groups opening in Leavenworth.  I was responsible for getting the clinic stocked and set up, contracting with and credentialing the physicians with insurance companies and hiring and managing staff.

For the past three years, I have been a executive director for the Community Development Corporation of Leavenworth, the past two years as a volunteer.  Since development has been stalled due to a moratorium in NE Leavenworth, I have been working as a free-lance grant writer, and I have my own design and art business, Bauder Arts.
